Welcome everyone to another installment of the Esoteric Wellness Blog. I am your host, Coach Kyle.

So what is on my mind today? I think today I want to talk about something that's got me really excited. Maybe not everyone's aware of it yet, or perhaps just getting hints and pieces of it, but advancements in science—specifically neuroscience, quantum physics, and some other areas—are really leading us to a new understanding of things. And I feel this is happening in a way that’s making me very, very hopeful for the future of humanity.

Let’s start with neuroscience. I used to be really fascinated with the concept of the mind-body connection, but modern neuroscience is telling us there aren’t actually two separate things to connect. There's no separation between mind and body, so there's no connection to make; it's all one thing. While we may experience it as separate ideas or concepts, we've been able to discover and see how all this really functions, down to the neuron level. We’ve identified pathways, seeing what’s talking to what and when, and we now understand that there is no separation because there’s no fundamental difference.

What this means is that, because all of this is connected in an extremely complex way—like feedback loops within feedback loops, with each input affecting all others—it becomes a highly intricate system with vast information flowing around. What happens in our mind, our conscious mind and brain, has direct, very real, physical effects in the body, and vice versa. This should be exciting! Initially, it might feel overwhelming, like we have little control, but in fact, it means we have an amazing level of control and influence over the whole system.

Previously, we thought of the body as the body and the mind as the mind—two separate entities. But with this new understanding that everything’s intimately tied together, we can directly influence what’s happening in our bodies with our minds, and vice versa. This gives us a tremendous amount of control and influence over the system, where our conscious mind, which we have a lot of control over, can influence the whole system, directing it toward the outcomes we desire. That’s an incredible power and ability we all possess.

Now, if we have this power, why are so many people suffering? The simple explanation is that we live in a world that isn’t naturally conducive to positive outcomes or a high quality of life. It’s a tragedy, and while there could be an environment that naturally leads us to a better place, we’re not there yet. But even in an environment that doesn’t naturally guide us positively, we can still exist in a more positive outcome because we have a significant amount of control over it.

In the work I do with clients facing chronic symptoms, they’ve been led down this path to a negative outcome, where their environment has steered them in that direction. Working with me, they’re learning how to use their influence, the control they have, to affect the whole system. This isn’t about tricking our brain into thinking we don’t need to experience symptoms or pain. It’s about wielding our influence to nudge the system in the direction we want.

Imagine we have a boulder rolling down a mountain, and we want to change its direction. If we tried to just stop it, it would likely run us over. But if we can nudge it consistently in one direction, we can drastically change its trajectory over time. That’s essentially what we’re doing: no total control, but with consistent nudges, we can shift the system at a high level.

One study comes to mind: researchers created two identical milkshakes but told one group it was indulgent and rich, and the other that it was a healthy, low-calorie option. Blood work before and after showed that just this difference in expectation led to drastically different biological markers, even though both groups consumed the same milkshake.

In another study, they informed one group of housekeepers that their work provided great physical exercise, and their health markers improved. The other group wasn’t taught anything new; it was business as usual. But in the group they informed that their work was exercise, they saw outcomes like weight loss and improvements in biomarkers like blood pressure and cholesterol. Nothing changed—just their belief and expectation around it. This is known as the placebo effect.

The placebo effect is incredibly powerful and quite amazing when you think about it. Just by holding a different belief and expectation about the outcome, we get a different outcome. It’s almost like magic. The level of influence this has in the body, down to individual neurotransmitters in the brain and other physical changes, is mind-blowing. This is a perfect example of what I’m talking about—something we’ve known about for a long time but are only just beginning to thoroughly understand.

We’re now learning about the pathways in the brain and nervous system where this information travels, and it’s fascinating. It used to be this almost magical phenomenon we didn’t understand, but now we see the effects and know that the placebo, or even nocebo effect (negative expectations), always plays a role in our lives. Imagine if you could train yourself to use that effect in a positive direction consistently—how different would you feel? I’d argue it would make a profound difference.

This process is about learning to harness this effect in a consistently positive way, recognizing where we’re not doing that, and making a change. Are we catastrophizing? Are we building ourselves up with negative expectations? Are we shooting ourselves in the foot? And then, what can we do to learn a new, positive approach that leads to better outcomes?

On top of this, developments in quantum physics are super interesting. For example, 99.9999% of your physical body is empty space. When you look at an atom, it’s a nucleus of protons and neutrons surrounded by electrons, with most of its structure being empty space. Even neighboring atoms in your skin aren’t physically touching; they’re held together by forces like electromagnetic and nuclear forces. What this means is that we’re essentially 99.9999% energy.

This opens up some interesting concepts. Energy is formless and doesn’t have physical boundaries. Even our skin interacts with the air around us, shedding atoms and taking in new ones. Where do we really start and end? The idea becomes even muddier when you consider our microbiome—all the microorganisms living on our skin, in our gut, and throughout our body. Many of these microbes are essential for our survival, creating amino acids and enzymes that our body can’t make on its own. So, where do we end, and where does the rest of the universe begin?

There are also intriguing developments in biofield research, which examines the field of energy around our bodies. For instance, our heart emits a field of electromagnetic radiation extending about six feet around us, which influences our immediate environment. Are we affecting people around us with this field? Are they affecting us? It’s an interesting question.

Another area of research shows that our bodies emit light, even though we can’t see it with our eyes. Every living thing emits some form of light. Could this be a form of communication? We don’t know, but these questions are fascinating.

This is where modern science is beginning to align with ancient, esoteric ideas that emphasize our connectedness with each other and the universe. We’re starting to see that there really isn’t a clear line separating us from everything else. Studies show that a positive doctor-patient relationship improves patient outcomes. When patients feel safe, heard, and valued, they heal faster. Sure, placebo plays a role by creating thoughts and emotions in the patient, but there may also be an interaction at an energetic level.

All of this gets me excited and hopeful for the future. We’re learning more and will continue to apply this knowledge in beneficial ways. But one thing I know for sure: we have the power to profoundly affect our own health and quality of life. Through gaining control over our thoughts, emotions, and how we relate to what happens in our lives, we can consciously create the experiences we want.

This realization—this understanding that we’re in so much control of our own experience—is huge. It doesn’t matter what’s happening around us; while we can’t control external events, we can always control how we experience them. Now, this isn’t like flipping a switch; it takes consistent practice and effort. But with time, we can learn to do this.

Nobody is perfect, but we’re here to practice and get a little better each day. So, if you listened to this entire reflection, thank you. I hope you found it interesting and useful in some way, and I look forward to the next one. You are beautiful. You are loved. Until next time.
